Automobiles have evolved from having just mechanical parts to include electrical and more recently electronic parts. In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems have become an integral part of the overall experience in cars. With high-end multimedia and navigation on mobile devices becoming the norm, consumers are expecting the same consumer electronic features with intuitive user experience in IVI systems. This is mounting pressure on automotive OEMs and Tier-1s to introduce the latest consumer electronic features at a pace comparable with the consumer market.

While OEMs focus on unique differentiators in IVI systems, 80% of the software is non-differentiated middleware. Hence, open source technologies like Android provide the means to re-use non-differentiating middleware while Tier-1s focus on developing differentiated features, thereby reducing time-to-market.

Sasken’s Android based IVI system bridges the gap in the stock Android by bringing in automotive specific functionalities to Android such as:

    • CAN framework
    • Reverse camera
    • Fast boot
    • BT sink modifications
    • AUX/HDMI-in
    • Apple CarPlay
    • SDL
    • Dual display
      • HUD integration for maps,
      • critical vehicle information
    • IVI reference HMI
    • Control of following functionality
      • HVAC
      • Seating/Lumbar adjustments
      • Windows control
    • Radio control including
      • AM/FM
      • HD radio
    • Remote activation of vehicle using mobile phone
      • Amazon Alexa integration for voice activated controls
    • Internet Radio apps
